What You Will Need For Shaving

Shaving Razor Brush SetYou’re ready. You’re prepared. You’ve made the decision. You and shaving, it’s going to happen. What on earth do you need? Razors, creams, balms, and what the hell is a badger brush?

Fear not, all will be revealed!

Thousands of men around the world do this every single day. I bet you there is someone doing it right now in fact. So it is not difficult. Supplies are readily available in most places and for a reasonable price, you can organise yourself a pretty good setup.

Razor and Blades

First things first, you can’t do anything without a razor. There are plenty of different kinds you can get with varying numbers of blades, and other bells and whistles.

There are a few famous brands that I will mention such as Gillette, Wilkinson Sword, Merkur, and Schick. You can get single blade all the way up to five blade cartridges.

Cream, Gel or Oil

The same brands that make the razors also have a wide range of creams, gels and oils. There are also plenty of other brands that specialise solely in these products. You only need one, not one of each, so ensure you get one that you like the scent of.

Face Cloth or Towel

You’ll need something to help you clean up as well as heating up your face. A face cloth is perfect for this, but if you haven’t got one you can use the corner of a towel. It’s not the size of it that matters it’s what you do with it.

Aftershave

You don’t have to go and spend hundreds of dollars buying the fanciest designer aftershaves – but you can if you want to. There are plenty of reasonably priced high quality balms and aftershaves that you can use. This is a recommended item, but not entirely necessary.

Mirror

The benefits of shaving cream showing you where you have and haven’t shaved are only useful if you have some way of seeing yourself. A mirror is still the best, easiest and cheapest way to do this, regardless of how awesome your camera might be.

If you haven’t got a mirror then you will need to organise one at some point. Fortunately, most houses and hotel rooms have one built in or hanging on the wall. This is the easiest way, using a hand mirror is just too awkward and probably too small to be effective.

Basin or Sink

The best to use is your standard bathroom sink with hot and cold taps, but if you do not have access to this, a basin full of hot water will do. Ideally, when you rinse off your blade after each stroke, you will use hot water from the tap. Swishing it around in a basin is not as effective, but will do if that’s all you have available.

Brush

For the most effective way of applying shaving cream, a brush is highly recommended. This is optional however – you do not need one for daily shaving, but it will be more effective if you have one. The very best ones are made from badger hair, hence the name Badger Brush. You can also get ones made from boar hair or nylon.

Mug or Scuttle

Again this is optional and less prevalent than the brushes. It is a special mug used to lather up the cream with the brush before applying to your face. A mug is just as a mug you would use for coffee, while a scuttle has a special spout used for pouring in hot water to help the lather.

You can easily go your whole life without using one of these, but they are nice to have if you want to have a nice proper kit, or if you are looking for a nice gift.
